Although you can get started in biological chemical engineering (also called biochemical engineering) with just a bachelor’s degree, it often makes more sense to get your Master of Engineering (MEng) in this field. Many engineering departments offering an integrated program that allows you to get your MEng in just four years through accelerated student. If you go through a bachelor’s degree program and then go back to school for your master’s degree, you’ll likely spend about six years getting your education in total. Though the exact time you’ll spend in school varies according to the college you choose and whether you go to school part time or full time, in most cases, you’ll find that entering an MEng program from the start is the most time-efficient way to get a biochemical engineering degree.

Biochemical engineering program courses vary from school to school, but the goal is the same: to teach you how to develop processes, build units, and create policy for converting raw materials into usable materials or energy in a way that is as environmentally-friendly and efficient as possible. Some colleges offer biochemical engineering concentrations as part of chemical engineering or biological engineering programs, since the fields are so closely related.

With an MEng degree, you can work in fields such as farming and food production, green energy, and healthcare. The classes you’ll take will cover topics such as cell science, microbial physiology, computer aided engineering, molecular biology, bioscience business, bioprocess technology, and mathematics. Most MEng in biochem engineering programs also have students participate in interships or research projects during their final year in school.

After you get your MEng in biological, you begin working in your field, or you can go on to get your doctorate in an advanced engineering degree program. Because this industry is growing rapidly, funding is available for most students studying in this field at any level.
