Civil engineering is an extremely broad field, and although you can find a job with just a bachelor’s degree, many employers prefer that you have at least a Master of Civil Engineering (MCE). This degree ensures that you not just eligible for the best entry-level positions, but also that you’re eligible for promotions and pay raises once you have experience in your field.

There are two main types of MCE programs. If you already have your bachelor’s degree in an engineering field, you can go back to school and get your MCE in about two years. The other type of program is an accelerated master’s degree program, where you’ll get your bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and your MCE from a single college, in one continuous degree program. These programs typically take four to five years, depending on your specific college and how many credit hours you complete each semester.

Although every MCE program is slightly different, some of the topics you can expect to cover include project development, business management, leadership, engineering technology, mathematics, design materials, project financing, soil mechanics, architecture, and structure.

Most MCE programs ask you to choose a concentration in one area of civil engineering, since this is such a broad field. You can work in urban planning, surveying, transportation engineering, environmental engineering, water treatment, or any one of the other many civil engineering fields. During your MCE program, you’ll take not only general civil engineering classes, but also classes specific to your concentration. During your final year, you could also complete an internship or development project in your field of civil engineering.

After you get your civil engineering degree you’ll qualify for a number of jobs across the country — even around the world. You can also go back to school to get your doctorate in civil engineering or a related field, which allows you to qualify for even more advanced engineering jobs.
