One of the quickest ways to get started in the computer engineering industry is to get your Associate of Science (AS) degree in this field. Many colleges offer AS programs in computer engineering that take less than two years to complete. This is a field where workers are still in high demand, and you can later go back to school to get a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree, building upon your associate’s degree education.

Every AS in computer engineering program is slightly different, but the main goal is to teach students about the integration of hardware and software. You’ll take classes covering topic areas such as networking, software integration, computer architecture, matrix theory, physics, and mathematics. An associate’s degree provides a general foundation in these topic areas, giving you the skills you need for an entry-level position in computer engineering.

The main advantage to getting your AS in computer engineering, rather than going for a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree, is that you can finish school and begin working in the field rather quickly. Many AS programs, however, so not offer student and alumni services to help with job placement, or internship opportunities. In today’s competitive job market, it could be difficult for you to find a job in your area, depending where you want to live and work.

However, with an associates in computer engineering, you can get a degree for the lowest cost possible, and if you’re hired by a larger company, many will not only provide on the job training, but also give you access to tuition assistance programs. With these programs, you could go back to school for free, as long as you remain working with the company. So, getting an AS could mean that you get the rest of your education for free.
