While you can get started in computer engineering with just an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree, many employers today are requiring that their top-level employers have at least a Master of Science, or MS, in the field. Getting your MS in computer engineering typically takes about two years if you already have a bachelor’s degree, through there are also a number of accelerated programs that allow students to get this degree directly after they complete a bachelor’s degree. In doing so, you’ll shave time off of your total education, spending just four or five years to earn both a bachelor’s degree and an MS in computer engineering.

In an MS in computer engineering program, you’ll build upon the skills you’ve already learned as part of a bachelor’s degree course. Most allow you to specialize or pursue in a concentration in one area of computer engineering, which better prepares you for a job in your specific field of interest. You can also get a general computer engineering degree if you’re not sure what kind of job you want. On-the-job training will supplement you MS degree in either case.

If you’re already working in a computer engineering position, you may be able to go back to school to get your master’s degree for free. Employers in this field often offer tuition assistance programs, which allow you to be reimbursed for training in an advanced degree program in exchange for continuing to work with the company. Check with you employer to see if you qualify.

Although masters in computer engineering programs are undoubtedly a lot of hard work, completing such a course means that you’ll qualify for more money. According to reports, the average annual salary for someone starting out in computer engineering with a bachelor’s degree was around $64,000, but with a master’s degree you can easily make six figures annually.
