Electrical engineering combines study in three areas: electricity, electromagnetism, and electronics. As you can imagine, there’s a lot to learn in this field, but you can get started working as an electrical engineer relatively quickly with just an associate’s degree. Generally, it takes about two years to get an Associate of Science (AS) in engineering, and while you won’t qualify for top-paying positions in the field if you don’t go on to get a bachelor’s degree or higher, you will have a solid knowledge foundation that allows you to be successful in entry-level engineering positions without spending years upon years in school.
With an associate’s degree program in any field, many of the classes you take will focus on general skills you need to be an engineer. You can expect to take a number of science and math courses, and some colleges require that you also take basic courses in subject areas like writing and business. After you’ve completed general courses, you’ll move on to take specialized courses in your field, in this case, electrical engineering. This will prepare you for work in any number of career fields, include transportation, communications, microelectronics, and power supply.
Some colleges separate electrical engineering and electronics engineering students, but this is less common for associate’s degree students. Your education will provide you with knowledge to work in both career fields, and if you choose to go back to school at a later date, you can further specialize to meet your current career goals.
One of the best reasons to choose an associate’s degree program over more advanced engineering programs in this field is that once you begin working for an employer in a basic job, you may qualify for tuition assistance. Many companies offer funds to help their electrical engineers pay for schooling in bachelor’s degree or master’s degree programs.
