One option for advancing in your career as an electrical engineer is to get a bachelor’s degree in the field. Although many entry-level electrical engineering positions require only an associate’s degree, it is hard to advance in this field if you don’t take the time to get additional training.

A Bachelor of Science (BS) in electrical engineering may actually not be as hard to earn as you think. With an associate’s degree, you should already have a strong foundation, and most colleges will transfer credits from associate’s degree programs, so you can finish your BS degree program in less time. Program time varies, but most students spend about two years getting their bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering if they already have an associate’s degree and about four years if they don’t have any prior college experience.

While you can advance your knowledge of electrical engineering simply by working in the field, there are some things that are taught in the classroom, not in the field. Your bachelor’s degree courses will include advanced-level math classes, design theory, and more. On-the-job training can teach you how to apply skills, but if you don’t know these skills in the first place, you won’t qualify for certain positions.

Once you have your bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, you can work in a variety of settings to complete projects in this field. Many bachelor’s degree programs also include courses on electronics, so you could work specifically in this setting, or you could take a more general electrical engineering job. This degree also often qualifies you for leadership positions, and you may play a role with training new employees working in entry-level jobs with your company.

Remember, you also have the option to get an advanced degree in electrical engineering upon graduation from a bachelor’s degree program. The more education you receive, the more likely you are to be promoted and receive pay raises, so getting a master’s degree is definitely worth considering.
