In the field of electronics engineering, you’ll work with equipment that uses electricity as a power source. It is a type of engineering closely related to electrical engineering, and some colleges teach the two as a single program or in a dual degree situation. For the most specialized education, however, you should look for a degree program specifically for electronics engineers.
While you can get started in electronics engineering with just an associate’s degree, most employers are looking for workers who have a higher level of education. You’ll have more doors open to you if you go through a electronics engineering program at the bachelor’s level, and from there, you can also go on to get your master’s degree in the field. The best way to qualify for the top jobs in this field is to have a combination of education and experience on your resume.
Bachelor of Science (BS) programs in electronics engineering typically take about four years to complete if you start with no prior engineering training. Many bachelor’s degree programs, however, will transfer most if not all credits from accredited associate’s degree programs in the field, so if you already have a lower-level degree, you’ll only spend about two years getting your BS in electronics engineering.
Course content for a bachelor’s degree program in this area varies according to the school you attend, but most programs start out by teaching you general engineering skills in topic areas like math and science. You’ll then move on to cover more advanced topics in areas directly related to electronics engineering. This is a very hands-on field, so most colleges have extremely hands-on classes as well. Even in online programs, you’ll work with simulations, 3D models, and more to get practical experience in electronics design, repair, maintenance, and optimization.
